What do you say when your child feels left out?

The Friendship program is 15 five-minute story lessons that teach kids 7 to 11 how to start a friendship, be a good listener, handle being left out, and navigate changing friendships.

2-minute role-plays in every program, so your child practices the words.

Little and often

Learning spread over several days helps children remember more than cramming it all at once. Lessons are short, so they fit into a regular family routine.

Our programs draw on the five social-emotional skill areas described by CASEL:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Social awareness
  • Relationship skills
  • Responsible decision-making

Why it works

Each day, your child practices one real-life skill in about five minutes: a short story, a choice to think through, a plan to try this week, and a quick practice with you. That design follows the four practices shared by the most effective social-emotional learning programs in a review of 213 studies (Durlak and colleagues, 2011): skills taught step by step, active practice, focused time on each skill, and clear goals. LessonFive itself hasn't been tested in its own study yet.

LessonFive gives parents the words and strategies for the moments many of us naturally fumble through.

Transforming just five minutes together into opportunities to build confidence, resilience, stronger relationships, and lifelong skills. I've worked in social-emotional learning for over 15 years. I highly recommend this app to any family looking for simple, effective ways to help their child thrive.

We heard about this app through a homeschool group. Our 9-year-old has been struggling a bit with making friends, and the stories have made it much easier for us to talk about it together. He's opened up more than we expected.

Parent of a 9-year-old

I joined LessonFive for my 10-year-old. We homeschool, and I was mainly interested in the Calm and Anxiety lessons. I thought we would only use those, but we've kept going because the other lessons have been really helpful too. She's started talking more about how she's feeling, which is a big deal for us.

Charmaine P.

Parent of a 10-year-old

The stories have helped my daughter talk to me without feeling like I'm questioning her. We'll chat about the character, and every now and then she'll say, "That's happened to me too." I've learned things about how she's feeling that she probably wouldn't have told me otherwise.

Yen T.

Parent of an 8-year-old

My 11-year-old gets overwhelmed easily, and I never knew what to say in the moment. The lessons gave me simple words I could actually use. We've only been using it for two weeks, but our conversations already feel calmer.

Cindy P.

Parent of an 11-year-old

We homeschool our kids and found LessonFive through a homeschool group. The stories gave us a safe way to talk about things that were hard to bring up.
